Oil:
It means petroleum in any form including crude oil, fuel oil, sludge oil, oil refuse, and refined products which are subjected to the provision of this Annex.
Crude Oil:
It means any liquid hydrocarbon mixture occurring naturally in the earth whether or not treated to render it suitable for transportation.
Oily Mixture:
It means a mixture with any oil content in it.
Oil Fuel:
It means any oil used as fuel in connection with the propulsion and auxiliary machinery of the ship in which such oil is carried.
Oil Tanker:
It means a ship constructed or adapted primarily to carry oil in bulk in its cargo spaces.
Crude oil Tanker:
A crude oil Tanker means an oil tanker engaged in the trade of carrying crude oil.
Product Carrier:
Product Carrier means an oil tanker engaged in the trade of carrying oil other than crude oil.
Combination Carrier:
A combination carrier means a ship designed to carry either oil cargo or solid cargo in bulk.
Instantaneous rate of Discharge of oil content:
It means the rate of discharge of oil in litres per hour at any instant divided by the speed of the ship in knots at the same instant.
Tank:
Tank is an enclosed space that is formed by the permanent structure of a ship and which is designed for the carriage of liquid in bulk.
Wing Tank:
Wing tank means any tank adjacent to the side shell plating.
Centre Tank:
Cente tank means any tank inboard of a longitudinal bulkhead.
Slop Tank:
A slop tank means a tank specifically designated for the collection of tank drainings, tank washings, and other oily mixtures.
Clean Ballast:
Clean ballast means the ballast in a tank which since oil was last carried therein, has been so cleaned that effluent therefrom if it were discharged from a ship which is stationary into clean calm water on a clear day would not produce visible traces of oil on the surface of the water or on adjoining shorelines or cause a sludge or emulsion to be deposited beneath the surface of the water or upon adjoining shorelines.
Segregated Ballast:
Segregated ballast means the ballast water introduced into a tank that is completely separated from the cargo oil and oil fuel system and which is permanently allocated to the carriage of ballast or to the cargoes other than oil or Noxious liquid substances.
Parts per million:
Parts per million (ppm) means parts of oil per million parts of water by volume.
Oil Residue (sludge):
It means the residual waste oil products generated during the normal operation of a ship such as those resulting from purification of fuel or lubricating oil for main or auxiliary machinery, separated waste oil from oil filtering equipment, waste oil collected in drip trays, and waste hydraulic and lubricating oils.
Oil residue (Sludge) Tank:
It means a tank that holds oil residue (sludge) from which sludge may be disposed directly through standard discharge connection or any other approved means of disposal.
Oily Bilge-water:
- It means water that may be contaminated by oil resulting from things such as leakage or maintenance work in machinery spaces.
- Any liquid entering the bilge system including bilge wells, bilge piping, tank tops, or bilge holding tanks is considered as oily bilge-water.
Oily bilge water holding tank:
An oily bilge water holding tank means a tank collecting oily bilge water prior to its discharge, transfer, or disposal.
Nearest land:
The term 'from the Nearest land' means to form the baseline from which the territorial sea of the territory in question is established under international law, except that, for the purpose of the present convention "from the nearest land" off the north-eastern coast of Australia shall mean from a line drawn from a point on the coast of Australia in:
En Route:
It means that the ship is underway at sea on a course or courses, including deviation from the shortest direct route, which is as far as practicable for navigational purpose.
Liquid Substances:
Liquid substances are those noxious liquid substances (click here to know more) having a vapour pressure not exceeding 0.28 MPa absolute at a temperature of 37.8 degrees Celcius.
Solidifying Substance:
Solidifying Substances means a noxious liquid substance which:
- In the case of a substance with a melting point of <15 degrees Celcius, is at a temperature of <5 degrees Celcius above its melting point at the time of unloading.
- In the case of a substance with a melting point of equal to or >15 degrees Celcius, is at a temperature of <10 degrees Celcius above its melting point at the time of unloading
Non-Solidifying Substance:
Persistent Floater:
- Density: less than or equal to Seawater (1025 kg/ cubic meters at 20 degrees Celcius).
- Vapour pressure: less than or equal to 0.3kPa.
- Solubility: less than or equal to 0.1% (for liquids) & 10% (for solids).
- Kinematic Viscosity: greater than 10 CST at 20 degrees Celcius.
Electronic Record Book:
Harmful Substances:
Harmful substances are those substances that are identified as marine pollutants in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code)
